East Indonesia Surf Information |
The
emerald islands of the Indonesian archipelago
have for centuries lured everyone, from
missionaries to pirates, traders and more
recently to tourists and backpackers. The
sandalwood and spice breezes, magnificent
beaches, mountains and volcanoes of these
islands acting as a magnet to both ancient and
modern travelers. But Indonesia is also the
ultimate surfer's paradise, with hundreds of
islands and unknown waves waiting to be
discovered. The climate is tropical and has two
main seasons: the Monsoon from November to march
and the dry season from June to October. The
surf is basically found on the Indian Ocean
(south/west coast) while the Pacific Ocean
(north/east coast ) has hardly any waves.
Although there are surf spots and good waves on
about any island, the main surfing destinations
are the Bali, Lombok & Sumbawa island.
Lombok is just across the Lombok straight from
Bali, about the size of the later but a world
away. Lombok is a much drier and tougher island
than its lush neighbor Bali, defined by dry
desert terrain, rugged highlands, towering
volcanoes, dramatic bays and headlands, and
numerous white sandy beaches dotting the
southern coast. Lombok's best known wave is
Desert Point, widely regarded as one of the best
and heaviest left-hand barrels in the world.
Desert Point lies in a remote mountainous region
on the Southwest coast and is best accessed by
boat. During the dry season (May to October),
the trade winds blow from the Southeast
providing offshore winds for Desert Point as
well as many of the left hander waves on the
island's Southwest coast. Lombok is an easy
escape from the somewhat crowded spots of Bali
and can be reached in 2 hours by Plane and 4
hours by Ferry. |

|
| Sumbawa is much like neighboring Lombok, much
drier than Bali and other parts of Indonesia.
Although four times larger than Lombok, it is
also flatter and the land is mostly barren with
many steep cliffs dropping straight into sea.
The two main surfing areas are West Sumbawa and
the Lakey area. This area has many steep cliffs
that offer scenic backdrops to epic surf. The
Lakey area can be accessed by charter, as well
as by ferry and overland transfers. Here there
are some hotels and surf camps located right in
front of the main breaks of Lakey Peak and Lakey
Pipe, with other waves within walking distance.
Most waves are a long paddle or walk across the
reef depending on the tide. During the dry
season (May to October), the trade winds blow
from the Southeast offering offshore winds to
the lefts of West Sumbawa. Alternately, the
winds in the wet season (November to April),
blow from the Southwest which results in more
right breaks with offshore conditions. |
