SUMBAWA ISLAND
” Sumbawa Island”
much like neighboring Lombok, much drier than Bali and other parts of Indonesia. Although four times larger than Lombok, it is also flatter and the land is mostly barren with many steep cliffs dropping straight into sea. The two main surfing areas are West Sumbawa and the Lakey area. This area has many steep cliffs that offer scenic backdrops to epic surf. The Lakey area can be accessed by charter, as well as by ferry and overland transfers. Here there are some hotels and surf camps located right in front of the main breaks of Lakey Peak and Lakey Pipe, with other waves within walking distance. Most waves are a long paddle or walk across the reef depending on the tide. During the dry season (May to October), the trade winds blow from the Southeast offering offshore winds to the lefts of West Sumbawa. Alternately, the winds in the wet season (November to April), blow from the Southwest which results in more right breaks with offshore conditions.
The Paradise for the surfer The waves which offer long to be rides break off outlying reefs
Hu’u and Lakey Beach – 44 km from Dompu
Some of the best waves in the world can be found at Hu’u, on the south coast. The waves which offer long to be rides break off outlying reefs: at Periscopes, Nangas, Lakey Peak, Pipeline, Cobblestones and Nanga Doros. International surfing competitions hosting teams from all over the world have been conducted here.
West Sumbawa:
The beach has beautiful white sand with small inlets that are fine for swimming and snorkeling. At low tide, it is possible to walk out along the coral reef exploring the many from of marine life on view in the shallow rock pools. Accommodation possibilities right on the beach adjacent to the many surf breaks range from budget to moderately priced. The Hu’u area is roughly five hours from Sumbawa Besar.
SURF REPORT:
- Lakey Peak (left and right hander)
- Left hander is a long walling ride with a heavy barrel section
- Right hander is not as long but still as heavy.
- best from 4 to 6-7 feet. But a fun ride from 2 to 3 foot and great wave for surfers of all standards
- works on any tide (although righter hander too fast on low tide)
- Lakey Pipe (just to the left of Lakey Peak)
- This wave ducks and weaves towards a hollowing section
- Is rideable from 2 – 6 foot. – Best up to 5 feet and at mid tide
- NUNGAS – to the left of Lakey Peak (a left hand point break)
- a long sectioning left hander -best up to 6 feet and at mid tide
4.PERISCOPES – Right hander (1km from Nungas)
- When Periscopes is working there is no time for messing around as it is a fast and hollow wave, It is a quick take off and then pull in, if you are not quick enough you will get a straight hander..
- Best up to 5 foot on Mid to High-tides with a southern swell
BEST MONTHS : MARCH til SEPTEMBER
From 9am till 12noon and then 1pm till 4pm – offshore conditions There are still good waves to be had during March and also October, depending on the weather conditions
